  大型走滑断层是陆-陆碰撞带最显著的构造特征之一。喜马拉雅-青藏高原造山过程中形成了几条长达上千公里的大型走滑断层(图1)。这些走滑断层可能强烈地影响了碰撞过程中的岩石圈变形分布,但其形成机制却并不明确。前人对青藏高原的变形机制主要基于三种端元模型:(1)刚性块体模型(); (2)粘性薄板模型()和(3)下地壳流模型()。其中,刚性块体模型假设岩石是完全脆性的(塑性变形),后两者假设岩石是完全粘性变形。这些简化模型可以解释部分观测,但无法兼顾集中变形和弥散变形两种端元情形。
